Some people hold out for marriage, but Lizzo held out for a Grammy.
Lizzo appeared on Benny Blanco's Friends Keep Secrets podcast, and told Benny and co-hosts Dave Burd and Kristin Batalucco about losing her virginity, saying, "I was a late bloomer. I lied about it for a long time."
When they tried to guess how old she was, Lizzo said, "Can I just tell you the year? 2020. Isn't that crazy?" She went on to explain, "For me, it was, like, I just promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn't have sex until I won a Grammy." The night of Jan. 26, 2020, she won three, but clarified that she didn't actually have sex that same night.
Lizzo then talked about the lies she told to cover up the fact that she'd never had sex. "It was so embarrassing," she recalled. "I was in, like, a friend group of girls and we were all 'girling' one night, and it was just like, 'Wait. Lizzo, are you a virgin?'" Lizzo said she hotly denied it, and then went a step further, claiming she "loved" sex.
But that wasn't the only way in which Lizzo was a late bloomer: She also revealed that she didn't have her first kiss until the age of 21. She explained that she came from a religious background, and all the kids at her church had made a pact "that we wouldn't do anything before marriage."
"And then, I was just so scared, like, no one wanted to kiss me," she added.
When she finally did kiss a guy, she said, "It was, like, a New Year's Eve thing and he, like, forced it on me and I was really mad, and I was like, 'My first kiss is ruined!'"
